Things to Do in Atlanta Over Thanksgiving Weekend 2026

Looking for things to do in Atlanta over Thanksgiving weekend? Lights, turkey trots, shopping and a private escape room game in Tucker for the whole crew.

If you are hunting for things to do in Atlanta over Thanksgiving weekend, you are probably juggling a lot at once: cousins in town, a teenager who is already bored, an uncle parked in front of football, and a grandparent who would rather take a walk than fight a crowd at the mall. Good news — metro Atlanta does this weekend well, and most of the best options are a short drive from Tucker.

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, which gives you four days to fill. Here are our local picks, plus one easy way to get everybody off the couch and actually talking to each other for an hour.

Thursday: Move First, Eat Later

Invesco QQQ Thanksgiving Day Half Marathon, 5K, Mile & Dash — Summerhill / Downtown Atlanta. Atlanta Track Club hosts the city’s favorite holiday race on Thursday, November 26, 2026, starting and finishing at Center Parc Stadium. There is a half marathon, a 5K, a Mile and a kids’ Dash, so the whole family can pick a distance and still be home before the turkey comes out of the oven. Register ahead on the Atlanta Track Club site.

Not a runner? Be a spectator. Standing on a curb cheering with a cup of coffee is a perfectly respectable Thanksgiving tradition.

Thursday or Friday Night: Holiday Lights

Garden Lights, Holiday Nights — Midtown Atlanta. The Atlanta Botanical Garden turns its grounds into a walkable light show that shines nightly from November 14, 2026 through January 10, 2027. This season brings expanded displays along the Flower Walk, the return of the mosaiculture dragon to the Skyline Garden, and new choreography for Nature’s Wonders. Tickets are timed and the garden is the only official seller, so book your night in advance.

Stone Mountain Christmas — Stone Mountain. Ten minutes up the road from us, Stone Mountain Park runs Stone Mountain Christmas from November 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027 on select dates, with more than two million lights, a dozen-plus shows and activities. Check the park calendar before you load the van, since not every date is an event date.

Skating above the city — Old Fourth Ward. The rooftop ice rink at The Roof at Ponce City Market is a holiday favorite with skyline views, games and food nearby. Check the official site for this year’s opening date and hours.

Friday: Shop It or Skip It

If your family actually enjoys Black Friday, head to Buckhead for Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, Atlanta’s two big holiday shopping destinations, with seasonal deals and festive decor.

If they do not, Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to dig through Atlanta’s vintage and thrift scene instead. Little Five Points is the classic stop for one-of-a-kind finds, and it is an easy intown detour on the way back toward Tucker.

Prefer something with zero parking-lot stress? Museum shops are a sleeper pick. The store at the High Museum of Art in Midtown is full of art prints, jewelry and kid-friendly gifts, and you can see the galleries while you are there.

Things to Do in Atlanta Over Thanksgiving Weekend With Kids and Teens

Fernbank Museum of Natural History — Druid Hills. Our closest big-ticket museum, and a holiday tradition thanks to its Winter Wonderland exhibit, which fills two floors with decorated trees and displays representing cultures from around the world, built with local consulates and cultural partners. Check Fernbank for this year’s dates and hours. The outdoor WildWoods trails are a nice bonus for restless kids.

Georgia Aquarium — Downtown Atlanta. The Georgia Aquarium is a reliable crowd-pleaser for out-of-town guests of every age: whale sharks and manta rays in Ocean Voyager, beluga whales and African penguins in Cold Water Quest, plus the dolphins. Buy timed tickets ahead on a holiday weekend.

Walk the BeltLine — Old Fourth Ward and Inman Park. A stroll or bike ride on the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail is the cheapest fun on this list: art, people-watching, food stops and crisp November air.

Get Everyone Off the Couch at Mind Busting Escape Rooms

Here is the problem with Thanksgiving weekend: everybody is in the same house, nobody agrees on a movie, and half the group is on their phones. An escape room fixes that in 60 minutes.

We are Mind Busting Escape Rooms at 2258 Northlake Parkway, Suite 105, Tucker, GA 30084 — right off the Northlake exit on I-285, with free parking. We have eight themed rooms, every game runs 60 minutes, and every game is completely private. No strangers mixed into your family’s team. We are open every day from 11 AM, with late start times if dinner runs long, so you can squeeze a game in Thursday night or any time over the weekend. Book online whenever you finally get everyone to agree.

One more thing worth saying out loud, because people always ask: our rooms are suspense, not horror. No jump scares, no live actors chasing anyone. Grandma is fine. The 12-year-old is fine.

Which Room for Your Group

  • First-timers and mixed-age families: Narco is our easiest room, which means more solving and less staring at each other.
  • The relatives who think they are geniuses: point them at Isolation, one of our two hardest rooms. Humility is a gift.
  • Two carloads of people: ask about booking multiple rooms at the same time so your group plays side by side and compares notes afterward.

Groups run from 2 to 10 players per room. Still shopping for the cousin who has everything? Our gift cards are sold online on our website and make a very easy Black Friday win.

Saturday: Burn Off the Pie Outside

Late November is prime hiking weather in Georgia. Walk up the mountain at Stone Mountain Park in the morning, or drive west to Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs for mill ruins, river trails and some of the best remaining fall color in metro Atlanta.

Closer to home, keep an eye on the City of Tucker events calendar for Main Street holiday happenings — our downtown does the season in a small-town way the big venues cannot match.

Hosting 11 to 80 People? We Can Handle That

Some Atlanta families are genuinely enormous, and some of you are planning a company gathering in the same week. Groups of 11 to 80 play across multiple rooms at the same time, which is exactly how our team building and large group bookings work. Everybody starts together, everybody finishes together, and nobody sits out.

A Simple Thanksgiving Weekend Plan

  1. Thursday morning: run or cheer at the Thanksgiving Day race downtown.
  2. Thursday night: holiday lights in Midtown, or a late escape room game in Tucker once the kitchen is clean.
  3. Friday: Buckhead shopping or Little Five Points thrifting, then Fernbank in Druid Hills.
  4. Saturday: hike Stone Mountain, then Stone Mountain Christmas after dark if it is an event night.
  5. Sunday: Georgia Aquarium or a slow BeltLine walk before everyone flies home.

Sources: event dates and details come from each venue’s official website linked above: Atlanta Track Club, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Stone Mountain Park, The Roof at Ponce City Market, Simon (Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza), High Museum of Art, Fernbank Museum, Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta BeltLine, Georgia State Parks and the City of Tucker. Plans can change, so confirm before you go.

FAQ

Is an escape room a good fit for a mixed-age family?

Yes. Rooms take 2 to 10 players, and younger kids do well when adults are solving alongside them. Narco is the friendliest starting point. Cartel is our one exception: it holds up to 6 players and is for ages 12 and up.

Are you open on Thanksgiving weekend?

We are open every day starting at 11 AM, with our last start at 11:30 PM (11:45 PM on Saturday). Holiday weekend slots go fast, so reserve your time early.

Will we be grouped with strangers?

Never. Every game is private — just your family or friends and your game host.

Thanksgiving weekend in Atlanta is short, and the couch is undefeated unless you give people a reason to stand up. Pick a few things from this list, then book your private room at Mind Busting Escape Rooms in Tucker and give your crew a story they will still be arguing about next Thanksgiving.
